The metaverse has the potential to unlock exciting and innovative digital use cases for enterprises and will drive a fresh wave of investment in data center infrastructure and cloud platforms, a leading analyst has predicted.
Dell’Oro Research Director Baron Fung said the recent NVIDIA GTC Fall 2021 virtual event was a showcase for numerous developments in the field of AI and machine learning. It also demonstrated new applications for the metaverse, a digital universe created by the convergence of the real world and virtual worlds, abstracted from virtual reality, augmented reality and other 3D visual projections.
While its relevance in fields like gaming and social media has been much discussed, new ways for enterprises to benefit are starting to emerge. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, for example, has said he plans for his company to build an ‘enterprise metaverse’.
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest brewer, is an early example of an enterprise already deploying metaverse applications to improve operations. It has used Azure Digital Twins to create a digital model of its breweries and supply chain. The model is synchronised in real-time with the company’s physical environment enabling, for example, its brewmasters to test adjustments to the brewing process and carry out quality control.
Businesses are being advised to enhance their competitiveness by engaging with customers in the metaverse, using it to create new advertising and sponsorship opportunities.
“Several leading cloud service providers recently laid out their visions of the metaverse,” said Fung. “Facebook, which changed its name to Meta to align its focus on the metaverse, envisions people working, traveling, and socializing in virtual worlds. Microsoft already offers holograms and mixed-reality on its Microsoft Mesh platform and announced plans to bring holograms and virtual avatars to Microsoft Teams next year. Tencent recently shared its metaverse plan to leverage its strengths in multiplayer gaming on its social media platform.”
He said that in order to recreate an accurate virtual representation of the real world, massive amounts of AI training data would need to be acquired, captured, and processed: “This would stretch the limits of the compute infrastructure,” he noted. “During GTC, NVIDIA highlighted various solutions that could help pave the way for the proliferation of the metaverse in the near future.”
