Online fashion brand Rebecca Minkoff has become the latest US-based retailer to revolutionise its supply chain with blockchain. For the launch of its new RM Green(e) clothing collection, the New York company has partnered with marketing consultancy Resonance to develop a cloud-based supply chain model which means that no new garment is produced until it has been purchased by a customer.
The platform devised by Resonance is able to facilitate real-time ordering and saves the need for Rebecca Minkoff to stock particular styles and materials before demand levels are known. The new model also means there is no need to delete a range that is still selling to make physical room to stock a new range. The made-to-order system means that a wider variety of sizes are available than would be possible in a bricks and mortar store.
Garments are tagged with QR codes which upon delivery to the customer are scanned by phone to display the purchase’s provenance and environmental credentials via a blockchain-driven portal called ONE.Code. Sustainable fashion that deploys technology to save waste looks set to become a major growth market.
