The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team has deployed the latest data analytics technology as it bids to retain its Formula One World Constructors crown.
The team’s new Mercedes-AMG F1 W13 EQ Performance vehicle, currently undergoing pre-season testing in Barcelona, has benefitted from various analytics innovations including race simulations that can influence up-to-the-minute car setup and configuration decisions. Through its partnership with TIBCO Software, Mercedes is also able to conduct cost-value analysis across engineering and finance data sources to help comply with FIA cost cap regulations.
“Racing has become so much more than just the car,” said Michael Taylor, IT director, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. “We need to provide our drivers with all the information they need to get the best out of the car on that day, that circuit, and in those conditions, which all comes from data. We use data to create a better view of each race through simulations and for insights into value and cost from design to manufacturing to on-track performance, giving us an overall edge when it comes to planning and execution for each race, and across the season.”
The TIBCO Spotfire platform, he said, enhances understanding of various factors affecting car performance, and enables car configuration updates throughout a race weekend. It is deployed to analyse simulations and assess the effects of tunable car configuration parameters, including suspension, rear and front wings, and aerodynamics, on car performance. Working with digital twins of the cars, the team can run millions of simulations to assess a car’s performance at the tracks.
