Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica has outlined innovative plans for the metaverse, intending to use next week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to showcase its commitment.
MWC22, the flagship event for global mobile telephony body the GSMA, will see Telefonica replicating its physical presence in a parallel virtual world.
The operator said the event will show how it is moving beyond straight 5G services to ones based in the metaverse. Its combination of real-time and online participation will, it said, be a demonstration of digital transformation made real.
Telefonica will host 952 square metres of actual floor space at the event, housing four demo areas on smart industry, 5G holographic telepresence, industrial robotics and drone protection. Visitors will be able to virtually visit these areas and see demos including ones using drones, 5G and AI in different enterprise use cases. Another demo will demonstrate cybersecurity efforts in smart cities.
